Character Information
Name: Saber (Arturia Pendragon)
Canon: Fate/Zero
Canon Point: End of Zero, just after the Grail's destruction.
Age: Late teens (apparent); actual unknown
History: wiki link
Personality:
Saber (or Arturia, to give her her proper name) initially comes across as cold, reserved and serious. She doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor, preferring to set herself apart as detached and aloof and focusing on the problem at hand rather than distracting herself with humor or frivolous past-times. To a certain extent, this is a very real part of her personality - she is serious and she prefers to deal with problems as they arise and without fuss, but this coldness is also a mask. She often suppresses or buries her emotions, partially because she believes that to indulge in them and to allow emotion to cloud her judgement would imperil not only her, but those that she fights for. Partially because of her self-imposed detachment, she has a tendency to be very direct, verging on blunt.
Adding to the sense of detachment is her very real sense of justice and fair play, which she clings to without fail. To Arturia, honor, chivalry, and righteousness are not just words - they are ideals that she strives to uphold, even if they put her at a disadvantage and has to be forced by magic if instructed to use more underhanded tactics. She will happily temporarily handicap herself to allow for a fair fight with an honorable opponent. Similarly, she will quite literally sacrifice herself for a person (or people) that she has sworn to protect. This sense of responsibility permeates her and is a part of why she tries to remain so detached from everything around her. It is easier to make decisions and choices when she doesn't allow herself to indulge in emotion. It is easier for her to think of herself as an extension of another's will or as a tool of her people than it is for her to try and grapple with her own feelings in the midst of combat.
Her self-imposed disconnect means that she sometimes misses minor social cues and isn't always familiar with others emotions or reactions. At times, she even dismisses them outright if she believes they are being foolish or are incorrect and this adds to the sense of Saber as a very distant and uncaring individual.
The emotions that she does tend to express without prompting are typically cold anger or a detached sense of respect and loyalty - although she will eventually warm to those that she is genuinely fond of. It's only after a great deal of time spent with people that Saber begins to express herself more fully. Even then, she tends to be restrained in her reactions and emotions rather than exuberant. She does, for example, have a great love of food and flavor, having been raised on rather plain cooking and delicious food will absolutely earn a positive, starry-eyed reaction from her.
Despite this cool mask that Saber projects, she does have a kind and caring heart underneath. She wants others to be happy and is willing to sacrifice for them, but doesn't seem to totally understand that she can try to find happiness for herself. Her whole life has been wrapped in duty and in trying to be the perfect king that can be self-sacrificial in the extreme. Given "permisson" to set aside her self-imposed duties and the need to fight, she could become a much more emotionally open person - however, it's unlikely that she'll ever allow that of herself. She's too tied up in her sense of duty and in her own regrets about her self-perceived failure to give her kingdom the end that she thought it deserved.
Abilities & Skills:
Even without any other powers, Saber is a skilled sowrdswoman and fighter, as well as an excellent tactician and leader of armies. She is able to duel and hold her own on the frontlines of a war, even against men and women who may have size advantages against her. In addition, she has a finely honed sense of battle instinct that allows her to size up and evaluate her opponents, giving her something that approaches a "sixth sense" and the ability to rapidly size up an opponent's skill. It's not infallible, of course, and she is still vulnerable and capable of being defeated.
Saber is also a skilled rider and horsewoman.
As a Servant and Heroic Spirit, Saber gains a number of supernatural abilities that make her a much tougher and fearsome opponent; obviously, she won't have those in Aefenglom. They include:
-Her body creates (or created, while she was human) large amounts of magical energy, due in part to her containing the blood of dragons within her. This also lends her a degree of resistance to other magical energy and attacks, allowing her to shrug off spells or damage that might otherwise harm normal people.
-As a Servant, she has increased speed, strength, and durability.
-Mana Burst: essentially, Saber infuses her body and her weapons with a great deal of magical energy and then releases it in controlled "bursts" to allow for higher speed and to inflict more damage, as well as allowing her to resist damage and parry blows.
-Excalibur Noble Phantasm: As a Servant, Saber can unleas ha massive blast of light and magical energy from her sword, Excalibur. This attack is powerful enough to sweep away entire armies or crack buildings open, leaving ruin in its wake. However, it requires her to use both hands and if one arm is disabled or wounded, she is unable to use it. It also drains her energy and often leaves her exhausted after using it.
Inventory/Companions:
-A suit of armor.
-The sword Excalibur; in Aefenglom it is merely a very fancy and well-made sword instead of inherently magical.
Choice: Monster - Chimera (Griffin)
Reason: Chimera, in some ways is both appropriate and inappropriate (in that it will challenge her). In some respects, becoming more monstrous and less "human" will force her to deal with not coming off as either a noble knight or a relatively inoffensive/youth young woman. Conversely, the idea of having the strength of a lion or other mythical creature is in line with her personality and her general role in her story. Similarly, she herself is "mythical" - and as such, becoming a mythical creature fits right into her theme.
